Once every year in August, over 200 of the most prized collector cars in the world roll onto what is often called the best finishing hole in golf, the famed 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links. Tyre meets turf at one of the most competitive events in the automotive world.
The 2016 Concours d’Elegance concluded with a first-time entrant, Richard Mattei lifting the top prize, as his gleaming black “1936 Lancia Astura Pinin Farina Cabriolet” was named ‘Best of Show’ for which he received a sculpted glass trophy, a Rolex watch and a magnum of champagne. When the award was announced, it took Mattei a moment to grasp the accomplishment, “I was just happy to be an entrant at Pebble Beach and now to get an award, and not just one, but three!” Mattei’s winning entrant car was once owned by legendary guitarist Eric Clapton, who declared it to be “the most fun I’ve had off stage and out of bed”.
In tandem with the competition between the extraordinary historic automobiles, the Concours also hosted to some of the world's most anticipated concept cars and new car debuts. Visitors at the Concept Lawn got to see the rarest or rare cars including the one-of-a-kind Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo, the McLaren 570GT, a silver Infiniti Q80 and an Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Coupe to name a few.
The year 2016 also marks the 50th anniversary for the glorious Ford GT40 MK II winning the historic Le Mans 24 hours’ race. The Concours d’Elegance, this year was a magnificent sight exclusively featuring 16 of the historic race winning Ford GT40’s and their drivers, displaying sheer elegance on the lawns of Pebble Beach Golf Links.
